Valencian Community to launch alert system for chronic medication adherence

The Valencian Community Health Department will launch a new proactive alert system on October 1 to ensure continuity of care for patients on chronic treatments. The program targets prescriptions lasting 180 days or longer and is expected to benefit approximately 2.5 million people in the region.

The system uses early detection alerts to notify patients when their long-term medications are nearing expiration. Notifications will be sent via SMS or the GVA-Salut application. If a physician has already authorized an extension, the patient will receive a confirmation; if a medical review is necessary, the alert provides time to schedule an appointment before the medication runs out.

By interconnecting family doctor clinical histories, health center management systems, and pharmacy electronic prescriptions, the initiative aims to reduce unscheduled primary care appointments for bureaucratic medication renewals by an estimated 25%. Health Minister Marciano Gómez stated the measure is a step toward reducing paperwork in public healthcare and improving proactive patient management.
