Valencian environmental projects utilize AI and nature-based solutions

New technological and scientific initiatives in the Valencian Community are focusing on environmental risk management and climate change adaptation.

Vielca Medio Ambiente has developed a remote sensing project that utilizes satellite imagery, drones, and sensors combined with artificial intelligence to predict and manage natural risks such as forest fires and floods. The project, which received a high score from the Agència Valenciana de la Innovació, aims to provide authorities with precise data to identify vulnerable areas and assess post-disaster damage.

In Ontinyent, the local government is collaborating with the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) on a 2.93 million euro European project. This initiative studies the ‘Mamás Belgas’ floodable park as a nature-based solution to enhance water resilience. Over the next 36 months, researchers will use hydrological models and field instrumentation to evaluate how this green infrastructure mitigates flood risks and improves water quality within the Júcar river basin.
