Valencian government completes 32 of 41 emergency flood works
The Valencian regional government has completed 32 of the 41 emergency works planned for state-owned ravines in the Comunitat Valenciana. These interventions aim to reduce the risk of flash floods similar to the catastrophic DANA event of 2024 by channeling and conditioning riverbeds near urban centers.
Miguel Barrachina, the regional Minister of Agriculture, Water, Livestock, and Fisheries, reported these figures during a session of Les Corts Valencianes. He noted that eight projects are in their final stages, while one has yet to begin. The regional government is investing 56 million euros into these works, which include cleaning and conditioning sensitive watercourses.
Barrachina criticized the central government, stating that the regional administration is funding these projects—which fall under state jurisdiction—using local resources and bank loans. He expressed concern regarding the ongoing vulnerability to intense rainfall, noting that an effective early warning system may not be operational for another three to four years.
