The Generalitat Valenciana has launched 'Ocean Watcher', a pilot project designed to enhance water quality monitoring using drones, hyperspectral cameras, and artificial intelligence. The initiative aims to significantly reduce the response time for detecting pollution or urban discharges. While traditional laboratory analysis can take approximately 24 hours to provide results, this new system seeks to provide near real-time data.

The technology works by processing spectral images captured from the air and correlating them with surface water samples taken on the ground. This data is used to calibrate algorithms that monitor environmental parameters such as turbidity and temperature.

The pilot program is currently being implemented at six discharge points along the Valencian coast, including locations in Meliana, Alboraya, Valencia, and Sueca. Officials emphasized that Ocean Watcher is intended to complement the existing surveillance network rather than replace it, providing an early warning system to improve environmental management.
