Valencian government launches rice straw management campaign

The Generalitat Valenciana has announced an accelerated schedule for the authorized burning of rice straw, starting September 16. This measure is designed to accommodate early crop varieties and ensure efficient management of agricultural residues following the harvest.

In addition to controlled burning, the regional government is implementing a free collection and management service for rice straw. Managed by the public company Vaersa, this service allows farmers in key production areas—including L'Albufera, Ribera Sur del Xúquer, Pego-Oliva, and Almenara—to request the removal of straw from their plots at no cost.

With a regional subsidy of 90,000 euros, the initiative aims to collect and bale approximately 1,000 tons of straw. The collected material will be repurposed for the livestock sector as bedding or animal feed, creating a link between rice producers and farmers. While the government covers the baling costs, livestock farmers are responsible for transport expenses.

Controlled burning is subject to strict fire safety conditions. It is permitted only when the fire emergency level is at level 1 and within the timeframe between sunrise and two hours before sunset. These regulations aim to prevent pollution and protect wetland ecosystems.
