Valencian officials advocate for Cofrentes nuclear plant continuity
Vicente Martínez Mus, the Third Vice President and Counselor for Environment, Infrastructure, Territory, and Recovery of the Generalitat Valenciana, has advocated for the continued operation of the Cofrentes nuclear power plant. Speaking at the IV Energy Forum of the Valencian Community, Martínez Mus requested that the plant be subject to the same criteria used for the extension of the Almaraz plant's operating license until 2030.
Martínez Mus emphasized that the decision should be based on technical evidence, safety, and system stability rather than ideological stances. He described the facility as a strategic infrastructure that generates approximately 44% of the electricity produced in the Valencian Community and prevents the emission of nearly three million tons of CO2 annually.
The push for continuity comes amid rising electrical demand driven by industrial electrification and the need to attract new investments. Regional energy stakeholders noted that maintaining the plant is crucial for ensuring a stable and competitive energy supply amidst international geopolitical uncertainties.
