Spanish healthcare faces rising emergency waits and surgical backlogs
Healthcare systems in Spain are facing varying levels of pressure. In the Valencian Community, the Economic and Social Committee reported that waiting lists for specialist consultations reached 313,000 at the end of 2025, a 5.21% increase from the previous year. Specifically, the Hospital Universitari de la Plana has seen emergency room wait times surge by 62.2% in one year, with average stays rising from 3 hours and 18 minutes in 2024 to 5 hours and 20 minutes in 2025. While the PSPV political group has demanded explanations for these delays, the PPCV has defended the administration, noting that wait times for life-threatening surgical interventions have dropped from over two months to 17 days.
In terms of workforce, the Valencian public health sector has grown by 10.6% since 2022, reaching 71,437 professionals by the end of 2025. This increase is partly attributed to the direct management of former concessions in Dénia and Manises.
In Madrid, overall healthcare waiting lists saw a 3.34% decrease in July 2026, totaling 945,878 pending appointments. However, surgical waiting lists hit a record high of 114,627 patients, representing a 22.12% increase compared to July 2025. Additionally, the Community of Madrid is investing nearly 30 million euros in modernizing health centers, including the addition of a new physiotherapy unit at the La Plata Health Center in Torrejón de Ardoz.
