Valencia's role as the Second Republic capital approaches 90th anniversary
Historians Javier Navarro Navarro and José María Azkárraga are calling for greater public recognition of the 90th anniversary of Valencia serving as the capital of the Second Spanish Republic. During the Spanish Civil War, the city functioned as a central hub for government ministers and wartime propaganda.
In 1936, Valencia's streets were filled with political posters and agitation platforms designed to mobilize workers and peasants. The city served as a vital rear guard, supporting blood hospitals and revolutionary movements while the war front remained relatively close.
While the 80th anniversary in 2016 saw significant institutional commemoration, experts note a current lack of official initiative for the upcoming 90-year milestone. They argue that highlighting this period is particularly important given the rise of revisionist historical discourses.
