Valeo selects Sainte-Florine plant for drone motor production

Automotive supplier Valeo has selected its Sainte-Florine plant in Haute-Loire, France, to produce electric motors for drones intended for both civilian and military applications. The company stated that the site possesses all the necessary core competencies for component production, including assembly, plastic injection, and electronic circuit board manufacturing.

Valeo previously announced in July that it would begin producing electric motors without critical rare earth elements starting in 2027. These motors are intended for the French startup Harmattan AI. The company emphasized that its technology avoids heavy rare earths, which helps ensure supply chain security.

This move reflects a broader trend where some French automotive industry players are looking toward the defense sector for new opportunities amid global market shifts and rising military spending. Other recent agreements in France include partnerships between drone manufacturer Delair and Schaeffler, as well as between Renault and defense firms Turgis Gaillard and Thales.
