ValGenetics and Madeinplant launch UVANOVA project for seedless Aledo grapes
ValGenetics, Madeinplant, and the Institute of Molecular and Plant Biology (IBMCP-CSIC) have launched UVANOVA, a research and development project aimed at creating a seedless version of the Aledo grape variety.
The project utilizes CRISPR-Cas genome editing technology to precisely modify the genetic determinants responsible for seed development. The goal is to eliminate or significantly reduce seeds while preserving the specific organoleptic, agronomic, and commercial characteristics that define this variety, which is a key component of the Vinalopó Protected Designation of Origin (DOP).
Once the edited lines are obtained, the consortium will implement an in vitro regeneration protocol to cultivate modified cells into complete plants. This process ensures the modifications are stable and can be reliably multiplied for agricultural use. The initiative is funded by the Agència Valenciana de la Innovació (AVI) and the European Union.
