Valivade, India, to host museum dedicated to WWII Polish refugees

A new museum is being constructed in Valivade, India, to commemorate the thousands of Polish refugees who sought sanctuary there during World War II. The site, once known as ‘Little Poland’, served as a major settlement for approximately 5,000 Polish soldiers and civilians, including many orphaned children, who were evacuated from the Soviet Union following the Sikorski–Majski agreement.

During the war, the settlement featured five districts containing schools, a hospital, a church, a theater, and a cinema. The museum project, initiated in 2016 following a meeting between the current Maharaja and the former Polish Ambassador Adam Burakowski, aims to preserve this history. The facility will include reconstructed residential modules based on archival photographs, as well as exhibits featuring traditional Polish folk costumes, scouting uniforms, and personal artifacts from the era.

While the foundation stone was laid in 2019, the project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers are currently aiming for an opening in the autumn, though they noted the timeline remains subject to change.
