Valkenswaard asylum seeker center targeted in attempted arson

Police have confirmed an attempted arson at a building on Leenderweg in Valkenswaard, which is intended to serve as a future reception center for unaccompanied minor asylum seekers. Investigators discovered soot stains on the facade and several broken windows, suggesting a flammable liquid may have been thrown against the structure.

The planned facility was recently approved by the Central Agency for Asylum Seeker Reception (COA) and is intended to house approximately forty minors between the ages of 14 and 18 for a period of five to ten years. While the COA has given its approval, the municipality of Valkenswaard noted that a final decision has not yet been made.

Valkenswaard Mayor Corine van Overdijk condemned the act, stating that attempting to influence the legal process through arson or vandalism is unacceptable. The incident follows similar unrest in the region, including an earlier incident in Engelen where a proposed location was damaged by an explosive.
