Valladolid revamps La Rosaleda garden with €875,000 overhaul, adds Spain's first sensory garden

The City Council of Valladolid has launched a comprehensive renovation of La Rosaleda, the historic garden beside the Isabel la Catalina promenade and the Pisuerga River. The project, costing €875,000 and scheduled for five months, was presented by mayor Jesús Julio Carnero together with environment councillor Alejandro García Pellitero and park director Iván Ruano. It replaces ageing roses planted since the garden’s 1945 opening with 7,600 new European rose varieties that bloom longer and require less maintenance.

The redesign keeps the original four central beds but replants them in four colour zones – white, pink, yellow and red – creating a dynamic seasonal palette. A new wooden pergola will be covered with climbing plants, historic borders, benches, lighting and a refreshed drinking‑water fountain will be restored, and new waste bins installed. The renovation also introduces Spain’s first “Rosaleda de los Cinco Sentidos” (five‑senses garden), aimed at making the space more accessible and engaging for all visitors.
