Valle Bormida residents protest proposed waste incinerator

Protests are intensifying in the Valle Bormida region as local authorities and agricultural associations oppose a proposed waste-to-energy incinerator. The project, intended to manage waste for the city of Genoa, is being considered for sites in Cengio or Cairo, located on the border between Liguria and Piedmont.

Opponents, including mayors from the Alta Langa area and the Province of Cuneo, argue that the valley's geography facilitates thermal inversion, which could trap pollutants and prevent smoke from dispersing. There are significant concerns that emissions would degrade air quality and threaten local agricultural production and typical regional crops. This environmental tension follows a history of industrial pollution in the area related to the former Acna chemical plant.
