Colombia earthquake triggers massive relief and reconstruction efforts

Following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Colombia on August 10, 2026, the national government has declared an economic emergency. The disaster has resulted in at least 312 confirmed deaths and significant structural damage, with estimates suggesting reconstruction costs could reach 30 trillion pesos.

In response, the Colombian banking sector has structured a 1.1 trillion peso financial relief package, offering credit flexibility and interest waivers. Major private sector contributions have emerged, including 200,000 million pesos from the Sarmiento family, 150,000 million pesos from the Gilinski family, and 100,000 million pesos each from the Santo Domingo family and David Vélez.

Corporate entities are also mobilizing resources. Grupo Tecnoquímicas has pledged 50,000 million pesos for community and employee support, while Bavaria has committed 12,000 million pesos to assist 3,500 affected businesses. Additionally, BBVA Colombia has donated 2 million euros to humanitarian organizations including UNHCR and UNICEF. Internationally, Brazil has sent 10 tons of rice to assist with food security.
