Valledupar closes Guatapurí River sector for restoration works

The Valledupar Mayor's Office has issued Decree 0675 to implement temporary measures for the protection and recovery of the Guatapurí River's water zone. Starting Tuesday, August 18, 2026, the Balneario Hurtado sector will undergo intervention between the Sirena monument and the Hanging Bridge.

The works will include environmental, hydraulic, forestry, sanitation, geotechnical, and risk mitigation actions. During the project, access, swimming, and recreational activities will be restricted from Monday to Friday in the affected area. The schedule consists of two five-day phases, with a potential third phase if necessary.

Technical inspections revealed that artificial terraces, fills, and structures made of stone, sand, and cement have altered the river's natural conditions. These modifications risk reducing hydraulic capacity, increasing flow velocity, and promoting erosion. Mayor Ernesto Orozco Durán stated the goal is to restore environmental conditions and ensure the river can be enjoyed safely and responsibly.
