Vallegloria monastery reveals rare medieval textile

An ancient textile, preserved for centuries by nuns at the Vallegloria monastery in Spello, has emerged as a subject of significant historical research. Initial specialist observations suggest the artifact may originate from Fatimid-era Egypt and could date back to the 12th century.

Local tradition links the fabric to Saint Francis of Assisi, suggesting he may have donated it to Blessed Balbina during a visit to Vallegloria. Some have also attempted to connect the piece to Francis’s 1219 journey to Egypt during the Fifth Crusade, though these claims currently lack documentary confirmation in Franciscan sources.

The artifact was recently presented in a ceremony involving the Diocese of Foligno, the Municipality of Spello, and representatives from the Ministry of Culture. To ensure proper preservation and study, the research and conservation process will be entrusted to the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence.
