Valparaíso Prosecutor's Office hosts journalism ethics workshop
The Valparaíso Regional Prosecutor's Office and the Amparo y Justicia Foundation held a training workshop titled “Informar sin dañar” (Reporting without harming) for journalists, editors, and institutional communicators in Viña del Mar, Chile.
The initiative aimed to provide tools for ethical and informed media coverage of sensitive cases, particularly those involving children and adolescents who are victims of serious crimes, such as sexual assault, homicide, or femicide. Patricia Lebert, Communications Director of the Amparo y Justicia Foundation, emphasized the importance of preventing media coverage from causing further harm to victims and their families.
Psychologist Paz Ibarra addressed the long-term trauma and vulnerability experienced by victims of violent crimes. She also highlighted the emotional impact on media professionals, recommending self-care measures such as limiting social media exposure, seeking psychological support, and rotating coverage to prevent burnout. Additionally, Gonzalo Marks, head of the Victim and Witness Care Unit (URAVIT) at the Valparaíso Regional Prosecutor's Office, discussed the legal frameworks governing news coverage, balancing the right to information with the protection of victims.
