Valpas tech certifies hotels bug‑free as bed‑bug infestations rise

Bed‑bug infestations are increasing in hotels and other tourist accommodations worldwide as travelers move luggage across borders. The pests can hide in mattresses, headboards and furniture, reproduce rapidly, and develop resistance to chemical insecticides, causing economic losses, room closures and damage to brand reputation.

A Finnish startup, Valpas, has introduced a patented, chemical‑free monitoring system that is installed permanently in hotel rooms. The technology continuously verifies that rooms remain free of bed bugs, detecting and neutralising any insects brought in by guests during the first night. Certification results are shared with online travel agencies and booking platforms, allowing travelers to see a pest‑free guarantee when selecting accommodations. Co‑founder and CEO Martin Gois says the solution eliminates the need for toxic pesticide treatments.

Industry experts also stress the importance of proactive measures such as regular audits, staff training and routine inspections to prevent infestations before they spread. Together, technological certification and preventive management aim to protect guests, reduce financial losses for hotels, and preserve the reputation of the tourism sector.
