Valpovo funds medical exams for athletes amid national cost concerns

The city of Valpovo has allocated 40,000 euros from its budget to cover the costs of mandatory medical examinations for approximately 750 local athletes. This initiative aims to ease the financial burden on participants and ensure equal access to healthcare. Under a new regulation, the scope of these medical checks has doubled compared to previous standards, with examinations occurring annually.

In a broader national context, the Croatian Union of Niche Sports (HUNS) has criticized the rising costs of mandatory sports medical examinations across the country. HUNS reports that prices have increased between 7 and 11 times since the introduction of the euro, with individual exams costing parents between 70 and 90 euros. The organization has questioned whether these higher costs reflect improved quality and has called on authorities to explain why family doctors and pediatricians are not permitted to perform these checks, which could provide a more affordable alternative to private clinics.
