Valtellina faces isolation risk due to infrastructure fragility
The Valtellina region faces a significant risk of isolation due to structural weaknesses in its transportation network. A primary concern is the Monte Piazzo tunnel on the SS 36, which suffers from instability and degradation. Experts warn that if this tunnel becomes unusable, the SS 36 lacks sufficient redundant capacity to handle traffic, and alternative routes are inadequate for high volumes.
Hydrogeological fragility, including landslides and rockfalls, frequently disrupts both road and rail services. While the Lecco–Tirano railway plan aims to improve resilience by removing level crossings, it is viewed as a localized improvement rather than a systemic solution. Furthermore, ANAS has acknowledged that the condition of the SS 36 and its tunnels could become critical within 10 to 15 years, suggesting that current maintenance efforts may only provide temporary relief rather than addressing root vulnerabilities.
