Valterra Platinum posts earnings surge while chasing $100 million owed by Zimbabwe
Valterra Platinum announced that headline earnings for the first half of its financial year jumped sixteen‑fold to about R21.5 billion, driven by a sharp rebound in platinum‑group‑metal prices and the recovery of its Amandelbult operation after severe flooding. The profit surge generated a tax contribution of roughly R7.6 billion to South Africa’s Treasury and allowed a dividend payout of R15.1 billion, equal to about 70 % of earnings.
At the same time, the company said it is still negotiating with the Zimbabwean authorities over historic export‑proceeds owed from its Unki mine. Zimbabwe has paid only about $10 million of the roughly $120 million due, with a further $10 million in current proceeds pending. Valterra’s CFO Sayurie Naidoo said the firm is seeking resolution through tax offsets, possible support from the Reserve Bank and a proposed facility with the African Export‑Import Bank, while also engaging the South African government for assistance.
