Value-based care models prioritize quality and cost over service volume
Value-based care (VBC) is a healthcare delivery model that shifts reimbursement from a fee-for-service basis to a system based on the quality, cost, and patient experience of care provided. Unlike traditional models that reward the volume of services, tests, and procedures, VBC aims to meet specific standards such as improved health outcomes for specific populations, cost management, and patient access to care.
In clinical settings, the implementation of value-based healthcare (VBHC) has been shown to transform patient-centered care. By integrating patient education and feedback—including patient-reported outcome measures—clinicians can enhance shared decision-making and communication. This approach facilitates earlier detection of chronic conditions, more efficient interdepartmental coordination, and improved long-term health results through a more collaborative doctor-patient relationship.
