Value Chain Development Programme boosts Nigerian agricultural productivity

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) assisted Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) is implementing training and empowerment initiatives for farmers in Nigeria to enhance agricultural productivity.

In Niger State, the VCDP has conducted training for rice farmers in the Katcha Local Government Area. The program focuses on modern agronomic practices for the 2026 wet season, including the use of improved seedlings, nursery establishment, mechanised farming, and proper application of farm inputs to replace traditional methods and increase yields.

In Kogi State, the program has supported 3,256 women within the rice and cassava value chains. These women have transitioned from subsistence farming to agribusiness by adopting improved processing, milling, and packaging techniques. The initiative utilizes the Gender Action Learning System (GALS) to promote women’s participation in production and income decisions, while Empowerment Learning Centres provide training in financial literacy, nutrition, and entrepreneurship.
