Valve celebrates 30 years of shaping the PC gaming industry

Valve is celebrating its 30th anniversary, marking three decades since founders Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington left Microsoft to establish the studio on August 24, 1996. The company has fundamentally shaped the PC gaming landscape through its landmark software and digital distribution ecosystem.

Key milestones include the 1998 release of Half-Life, which revolutionized first-person shooter storytelling, and the 2003 launch of Steam. Steam has grown into a dominant digital storefront and community platform, at times hosting over 40 million concurrent users. Valve's portfolio also includes influential titles such as Counter-Strike, Portal, Dota, and Left 4 Dead.

In recent years, Valve has expanded into hardware, successfully launching the Steam Deck handheld and developing SteamOS and Proton to enhance Linux gaming. The company continues to target the living room space with Steam Machine projects and is exploring virtual reality. Despite its commercial success, fans continue to await news regarding a potential Half-Life 3.
