Valve intentionally leaked Left 4 Dead 2 trailer to bypass ESRB

Former Valve writer Chet Faliszek recently revealed that the company intentionally leaked a trailer for 'Left 4 Dead 2' nearly two decades ago. According to Faliszek, the decision was a response to difficulties with the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).

Faliszek explained that the ESRB would not allow the official release of the trailer at the time. To bypass these restrictions, Valve opted to use the leak as a marketing opportunity. The leaked footage, which appeared online around October 2009, was approximately three minutes long and featured intense violence involving the game's survivors fighting through crowds of zombies.

Due to the friction with the ESRB, Faliszek noted that much of the dialogue in the trailer eventually had to be toned down. He remarked that since the event occurred roughly 20 years ago, he felt it was safe to share the story now without facing repercussions.
