Valve open-sources Lepton to bring Android games to Steam Frame

Valve has released Lepton, an open-source compatibility layer designed to bring Android-native games to Linux and the Steam client. The tool is primarily intended to assist developers in porting VR Android games to the Steam Frame, a new Snapdragon-powered VR headset priced at $1,059.

Lepton functions by combining Valve’s proprietary code with components from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), utilizing elements from Waydroid, Anbox, Halium, and Hybris. It mounts host system libraries, including graphics drivers, the Steam library, and the Vulkan layer, while removing certain Android redundancies to improve efficiency.

While the tool is optimized for the Steam Frame, other use cases are possible, though Valve noted they may lack polish. Some developers are already utilizing Lepton to port Meta Quest games to the Steam Frame hardware.
