Valve releases SteamOS 0.4 update for Steam Frame headset
Valve has released the SteamOS 0.4 update for its Steam Frame headset, focusing on performance and reliability improvements. The update increases power efficiency and battery life by up to 12% during both local gameplay and streaming. It also enhances streaming quality through improved color clarity and addresses ‘Error 17’ connection issues, provided users opt into SteamVR 2.18.2 or later.
Additional fixes include resolving Wireless Adapter connectivity issues and ensuring manual configuration displays correct Wi-Fi channels across all regions. Valve has also released Steam Frame CAD files and electrical interface information for non-commercial use to facilitate hardware modifications.
In terms of hardware, an iFixit teardown of the $1,059 device highlights both repairable and challenging components. While the headband and sweat-absorbing pads are easily accessible, the cooling fan is deeply buried, and the battery requires careful prying to remove. Replacement parts will be provided by iFixit, though batteries and screens are currently unavailable at launch.
