Valve releases Lepton to run Android games on Linux
Valve has open-sourced Lepton, a new compatibility layer designed to run Android games on Linux via the Steam client. The project utilizes a containerized approach that allows applications to run as non-root users, integrating closely with the host operating system's graphics drivers and libraries like Vulkan and Mesa.
Lepton is specifically optimized for gaming rather than general-purpose Android use. It aims to help developers bring Android-based VR content to Valve’s new standalone Steam Frame headset, which operates on ARM architecture. By allowing developers to upload APK and OBB files directly through Steamworks, Valve seeks to expand the software catalog for its new hardware.
In a separate update, Valve released SteamOS 0.3.0 for the Steam Frame. This update includes fixes for substantially faster charging while the unit is in sleep mode, improved controller tracking during haptic feedback, system stability improvements, and a fix for a microphone audio bug.
