Vampire themes experience a resurgence in German film and television

German cinema and television are currently seeing a surge in vampire-themed content. Upcoming productions include the film ‘Die Blutgräfin’, directed by Ulrike Ottinger and starring Isabelle Huppert, as well as the British-German coming-of-age comedy series ‘The Reluctant Vampire’. Other notable titles contributing to this trend include ‘Love Sucks’, ‘Oderbruch’, and ‘City of Blood’.

Cultural expert Marcus Stiglegger notes that the modern vampire archetype, established by Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel ‘Dracula’, continues to define the genre through specific traits such as fangs, blood consumption, and an aversion to garlic. The figure of Dracula was historically inspired by Vlad III, the 15th-century ruler known as ‘the Impaler’.
