Van Agricultural Research Institute begins saltbush production

The Van Agricultural Research Institute has begun the production of saltbush (Atriplex canescens) to combat drought and improve livestock fodder in the region. Originally native to North America, the plant is highly resistant to drought and high soil salinity.

Following successful adaptation studies, seedlings were planted in a 20-decare area. The project, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, aims to use seeds from these seedlings to expand saltbush cultivation across Van's pastures and arid lands. The plant is expected to serve as an alternative high-protein forage source that remains green year-round, while also helping to mitigate erosion and utilize unproductive land.

Dr. Gülüstan Korkmaz, Director of the Institute, noted that the facility serves Van as well as Bitlis, Muş, Ağrı, and Hakkari. The institute's ongoing research focuses on increasing plant and animal production efficiency in the Van Lake and Zap Basin areas through breeding, pasture management, and effective resource use.
