Van Cliburn Gold Medalists Vadym Kholodenko and Nobuyuki Tsujii

The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition has served as a platform for world-class talent, including Gold Medalists Vadym Kholodenko and Nobuyuki Tsujii.

At the 47th Piano aux Jacobins festival, Vadym Kholodenko performed Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 29, known as the ‘Hammerklavier’. The performance highlighted the technical difficulty and emotional range of the piece, moving between intense, powerful chords and meditative, prayer-like passages.

Nobuyuki Tsujii, who has been blind since birth, also achieved distinction as a Van Cliburn Gold Medalist. To master complex repertoires, Tsujii utilized a specialized cassette method developed by his teacher. This technique involved recording small sections of music on separate tapes for the right and left hands, accompanied by verbal instructions on articulation, allowing him to learn through sound when Braille scores were insufficient.
