Van Gogh Museum hosts first James McNeill Whistler exhibition in Netherlands

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has launched a special exhibition titled ‘Whistler. Dandy und dwarsdenker’, running from October 16, 2026, until January 10, 2027. This event marks the first comprehensive overview of the British-American painter James McNeill Whistler in the Netherlands.

The exhibition explores Whistler’s artistic development and his role as a significant 19th-century figure, presenting his life and work through a curated narrative. While the museum’s permanent collection continues to feature central works by Vincent van Gogh, such as ‘Sunflowers’ and ‘The Potato Eaters’, this special showcase provides a different perspective on art history within the same institution.

To complement the exhibition, the museum offers guided tours in both Dutch and English. Additionally, the museum has integrated the exhibition into a broader autumn program, which includes experimental electronic music performances and research-focused events.
