Van Gogh Museum reaches agreement on renovation funding
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) have reached an agreement regarding the financing of the museum building's renovation. This settlement resolves a long-standing dispute that had created uncertainty about the institution's future.
The disagreement, which began last summer, centered on the €104 million cost of the renovation. The museum had previously indicated that its annual subsidy of €8.5 million would be insufficient to cover the project, leading to concerns that the museum might have to close. While a potential lawsuit was avoided through a mediation process, the specific details of the final financial agreement have not been disclosed by either party.
Renovations are scheduled to begin in the autumn of 2028. The museum will remain partially open during the construction period. Director Emilie Gordenker stated that the renovation is essential for the responsible preservation of the building and its world-famous collection for future generations.
