Van Gogh Museum reaches settlement with Dutch State for renovation

The Van Gogh Museum and the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science have reached a settlement agreement following years of dispute over renovation financing. The agreement, achieved through mediation, resolves uncertainty regarding the museum’s ability to modernize its facilities.

The renovation project is estimated to cost 104 million euros and is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2028. The budget allocates 76 million euros for maintenance and replacement work, 23 million euros for building sustainability, and 5 million euros for equipment improvements. The works aim to address critical needs in security, climate regulation, and structural durability.

The museum will remain partially open during the construction period, ensuring the permanent collection remains accessible to the public. The dispute previously centered on the museum’s request to increase its annual subsidy, which the government had initially rejected, arguing the institution could utilize its own funds and cash flow.
