Van Gogh Museum to host major James McNeill Whistler retrospective

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam will host a major retrospective of American painter James McNeill Whistler from October 16, 2026, to January 10, 2027. This exhibition marks the largest European retrospective of the artist in thirty years and is the first of its kind in the Netherlands. The collection will feature approximately one hundred works, including his nocturnes of the Thames and notable pieces such as ‘Arrangement in Grey and Black’.

In conjunction with recent major exhibitions at Tate Britain, new media coverage is exploring Whistler’s unique position in the art world. As an artist who forged an avant-garde path independent of the primary French and British movements, Whistler is noted for his focus on the aesthetic qualities of painting over narrative. Studies into his specific techniques, referred to as ‘Whistler’s Finish’, continue to be a subject of academic and cinematic interest.
