Van Lake Basin climate shifts toward Mediterranean pattern

The climate in the Van Lake Basin is undergoing a significant transformation due to global climate change, shifting toward a Mediterranean climate pattern. This change is disrupting the traditional seasonal memory that local populations previously relied upon to plan agricultural activities.

Historically, residents could predict rainfall, snowfall, and temperature fluctuations to determine optimal planting and harvesting periods. However, increasing droughts and altered precipitation patterns have made these traditional indicators unreliable. While 2026 saw increased rainfall during the winter, spring, and autumn months, experts warn that a single wet year does not negate the long-term effects of climate change.

Professor Faruk Alaeddinoğlu from Van Yüzüncü Yıl University noted that the ability to forecast weather based on long-term historical data is diminishing, making it increasingly difficult for farmers to manage their crops effectively.
