Van Lake Basin ecosystem revitalized by increased rainfall
Increased precipitation, including winter snow and spring and autumn rains, has revitalized the reed beds within the Van Lake Basin. This environmental shift has provided a greener landscape compared to previous years when drought caused reeds to dry out prematurely.
This revitalization has significantly reduced the risk of wildfires, which previously threatened the ecosystem and various wildlife species. The healthy reed beds serve as critical habitats for numerous bird species and other wildlife, acting as both permanent homes and essential breeding or transit points for migratory species.
Prof. Dr. Lokman Aslan, Director of the Wildlife Protection and Rehabilitation Center at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University, noted that these wetlands are vital for maintaining ecological diversity and species richness in the region.
