Van Lake Basin precipitation to support water resources through 2027

Recent precipitation in the Van Lake Basin, particularly heavy snowfall during winter and spring, is expected to sustain water resources and river flows until 2027. Professor Faruk Alaeddinoğlu of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University noted that these seasonal rains and snowfalls have effectively replenished underground water systems.

Despite high summer temperatures and significant evaporation, the lake level has not seen a dramatic decline, a phenomenon attributed to the continuous feeding of rivers by replenished groundwater. While 2026 has been a favorable year for precipitation, experts warn that this does not negate the long-term impacts of climate change. The timing, frequency, and intensity of rainfall are shifting, and the region remains vulnerable to future periods of drought.
