Van Nuys Boulevard faces urban decay and encampments

Van Nuys Boulevard in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley, once a famous center for youth cruising culture, has experienced significant urban decay. Investigations of the stretch between Sherman Way and Victory Boulevard reveal extensive homeless encampments, boarded-up storefronts, and visible signs of drug use.

Local business employees report severe disruptions. One 99-cent store was forced to relocate its customer entrance to an alley because tents completely blocked the original doorway. Witnesses noted debris including needles, crack pipes, broken metal spoons, lighters, and discarded food covering the sidewalks and bus stops.

Local workers expressed frustration with the deteriorating conditions and a perceived lack of municipal support. Aziz Saxenian, a dental assistant in the area, noted that customers frequently ask about the removal of encampments situated directly in front of businesses.
