Van pastry makers seek geographical indication for Van çöreği
Bakers in Van, Turkey, are calling for the local pastry known as Van çöreği to receive a geographical indication registration to protect its unique identity. The pastry is made by mixing butter, milk, sugar, yeast, salt, and flour, which is then baked in stone ovens at approximately 350 degrees Celsius.
Local masters, including Seyfettin Duman, emphasize that the quality of ingredients, particularly the fat used, is essential to achieving the authentic flavor. The product is a staple of the local breakfast culture and is often consumed throughout the day or during Ramadan. Due to high demand, the pastry is currently shipped from Van to various locations across Turkey and Europe.
