Van Yüzüncü Yıl University treats brain vascular malformation without surgery
Medical specialists at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University Dursun Odabaş Medical Center have successfully treated an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) using a non-surgical, endovascular method. The procedure, performed by an interventional neuroradiology team, involved accessing the brain's blood vessels via a catheter through the groin or wrist, avoiding the need for open skull surgery.
Dr. Saim Türkoğlu, an interventional neuroradiology specialist, noted that while the center has been operating for approximately four years, this marks the first time they have treated complex AVM cases. Previously, patients in the Eastern Anatolia region requiring such advanced care were typically referred to major medical hubs in Ankara or Istanbul. Following the successful procedure, the patient was discharged within 24 hours.
