The Okanagan Indian Band hosted its second annual OKIB Sylix Summer Hockey School at the Priest Valley Arena in Vernon, British Columbia, from July 27‑31. The event, founded in 2025 by band member Jeremy Holy Rider Tompson and youth coordinator Brendan Caron, welcomed about 51 children in its first year and expanded in 2026 to include participants from Penticton, Osoyoos, Westbank and the Lower and Upper Similkameen bands.

NHL alumni, including former Vernon Vipers forward Aaron Volpatti, served as guest coaches, and the Vancouver Canucks’ mascot Fin made an appearance. In addition to on‑ice training, the program teaches the Nsyilxcen language and culture, a component Chief Dan Wilson says supports truth‑and‑reconciliation efforts and is now offered at UBC Okanagan. Wilson recalled watching Canucks games with his grandmother and joked about being “shushed” if he talked during a broadcast.
