Vancouver Canucks begin NHL rebuild under new head coach

The Vancouver Canucks are entering a rebuilding phase following a season in which they finished last in the NHL standings with a 25-49-8 record. Rookie head coach Manny Malhotra stated that the team's new metrics of success focus on intangibles, such as intensity, tenacity, and being a team that is hard to play against, rather than just wins and losses.

As part of a roster overhaul, the Canucks previously traded captain and star defenceman Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild. In exchange, Vancouver received defenceman Zeev Buium, forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren, and a first-round draft pick. The team is scheduled to begin its season against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.
