Vancouver Extends Granville Street Pedestrian Zone Through Labour Day

Vancouver City Council voted to prolong the Granville Street Pedestrian Zone pilot and the city‑wide temporary patio program until the Labour Day weekend. The extension follows the FIFA World Cup activation that turned the five‑block stretch into a bustling public space, boosting foot traffic for local retailers, restaurants and arts venues. Mayor Ken Sim said the city wants to keep the momentum and give businesses certainty, while councillors noted the $4.75 million cost – including weekly engineering ($300,000) and policing ($200,000) expenses and a grant of up to $1.25 million for programming through the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association.

The council also directed staff to study a possible re‑activation of the pedestrian zone in November 2026 for a Christmas market and to collect further data on pedestrian activity, business performance and public safety. The decision reflects cooperation among municipal officials, the province, the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch and TransLink to secure necessary approvals.
