Vancouver Granville Street pedestrian zone concludes after successful summer

The three-month pedestrian zone on a five-block stretch of Vancouver’s Granville Street, extending from Georgia to Davie, has concluded. Initially implemented for fan activations related to the FIFA World Cup, the initiative received $4.75 million in city funding to extend its duration through the Labour Day weekend.

Local business leaders and residents have expressed support for the project. Jane Talbot, CEO of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, described the summer as a lifeline for local businesses, noting that the initiative was overwhelmingly positive despite varying experiences across different blocks. City Councillor Lisa Dominato also characterized the extension as a “great success” in revitalizing an area that has faced recent challenges.

The City of Vancouver is now conducting a comprehensive analysis to inform future urban planning. This review will include pedestrian counts, economic impact assessments, and public and business surveys. A formal report is expected to be presented to the City Council in early 2027, which will help determine if and how pedestrian zones might be implemented in the future.
