Vancouver Island economic report highlights forestry and aquaculture uncertainty

The 2026 State of the Island Economic Report, presented by Susan Mowbray of MNP at the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance summit, indicates an uncertain economic outlook for the region's key sectors.

Forestry employment is declining due to fibre constraints, higher U.S. tariffs, and a slowdown in the U.S. housing market. While harvest volumes showed a slight increase in 2026 compared to 2025, this was attributed to improved weather and resolved labour disputes rather than increased demand for lumber.

Aquaculture faces significant disruption as federal law mandates a ban on open net-pen salmon farming by June 30, 2029. Concerns were raised regarding the lack of a released transition plan and the potential loss of supporting infrastructure, such as hatcheries. There is also uncertainty regarding the economic viability of transitioning to closed containment aquaculture and the potential impact a collapse in salmon farming could have on shared industry suppliers and transportation.
