Vancouver Island farmers report 36 livestock killings suspected to be cougars
Farmers in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area of Vancouver Island are calling for increased intervention from the BC Conservation Officer Service following a series of livestock killings. Local residents report that one or more cougars are believed to be responsible for the deaths of 36 animals across five different farms.
Recent incidents include the killing of three geese on the farm of Billy and Garrett Jolicoeur. Other reported losses include 11 turkeys, five ducks, and one house cat at a farm in Parksville, as well as 10 goats at another location.
Farmers suspect the predator may be an injured adult, noting that the animal appears to be killing more prey than it consumes. Witnesses have reported hearing distinctive chirping sounds and have captured footage of the animal on surveillance cameras.
