Vancouver Island grizzly bear spotted near Zeballos
A juvenile grizzly bear was sighted at the end of September on the Zeballos Logging Road on northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Ehattesaht-Chinehkint councillor Ernie Smith reported seeing the young brown bear crossing the road near Highway 19 before it fled into the brush.
Wildlife photographer Tia Laughington, who has been documenting a North Island grizzly family, suggested the sighting may be a bold male from a litter of three cubs she observed in June. Laughington noted that all three cubs from that litter survived, which she described as an extraordinarily rare occurrence.
Grizzly sightings on the east coast of northern Vancouver Island have become more frequent. Earlier this year, the Village of Sayward issued a public warning following a sighting in May. Additionally, a grizzly that swam to Texada Island from Powell River in the summer of 2025 was reportedly killed illegally.
