Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League begins 2026-27 season

The Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) is scheduled to begin its 2026-27 regular season this weekend, starting Friday, Sept. 4. All 11 teams have completed training camps in preparation for the opening weekend, which includes six scheduled games.

VIJHL chair Shawn Vincent noted that a partnership with the B.C. Hockey League is assisting in recruiting international talent. While most players are Canadian, rosters include athletes from 13 other countries across four continents, including the United States, Germany, France, South Korea, and Japan.

Coaching changes and returns are also notable this season. Craig Didmon will lead the defending champion Victoria Cougars, replacing Mike Vandekamp. Other coaching updates include Lee Stone returning to the Campbell River Storm and Brian Passmore returning to the Westshore Wolves.
